How do I care for the leather top?

Clean the surface with a dry cloth and occasionally feed the hide with neutral wax or leather balm. Avoid abrasive cleaners that strip the original tooling. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent the mahogany panels and writing inserts from warping over time.

Can I dismantle a pedestal desk for moving?

Most pedestal desks separate into three manageable sections consisting of the two drawer pedestals and the heavy top slab. Lift the top free from locating dowels before shifting the side units. Ensure drawers are emptied and secured before transport to protect internal runners and dovetail joints from impact damage.

Are replacement handles common on these desks?

Many desks retain their original brass drop handles or knobs, though replacements occur frequently across nineteenth-century furniture. Inspect the back of the drawer boards for filled holes indicating earlier hardware. Matching period brassware can replace mismatched fittings without diminishing the structural integrity of the piece.
