What were small silver boxes used for?

These small containers served specific personal functions in daily Victorian life, holding dry snuff, calling cards, or medicinal vinaigrettes for reviving senses. Owners carried them in pockets or reticules as both practical accessories and indicators of social standing. Larger variations stayed on tables or desks to store stamps, pills, or trinkets. Their intricate exterior engraving allowed owners to display refined taste during polite society interactions.

How can I identify the maker and date?

British pieces typically bear a series of stamped hallmarks that include a maker mark, a standard mark indicating sterling silver, an assay office symbol like an anchor or leopard head, and a date letter. These tiny stamps reveal the exact year and town of manufacture. Matching the initials in the maker mark against historical records connects the object to workshops such as those run by Nathaniel Mills or Edward Smith. Unmarked items rely stylistic evidence and construction methods for dating.

How do I care for antique silver?

Gentle maintenance preserves the delicate hand engraving and any original interior silk, velvet, or gilt surfaces without wearing away the fine metal details. Avoid harsh chemical dips that strip away the dark oxidation in the engraved recesses which gives the pattern contrast. Store the items away from damp environments and use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Handling pieces carefully ensures hinges and clasps remain undamaged over time.
