How do I choose the right size fire guard?

Measure the width of your hearth opening and the clearance space available on the floor in front of the fireplace. Ensure folding screens or fenders match these dimensions to sit stable and flat against the hearth. Consider the height required if you need protection for children or pets, opting for taller nursery designs when safety is the primary concern.

Can these guards be used with modern fires?

Most antique guards fit standard hearths and function effectively with gas or electric hearth setups as well as traditional solid-fuel fires. Check the footprint and stability of the piece on your specific floor surface before daily use. Ensure that wire mesh and folding mechanisms remain clear of direct, excessive flame contact to preserve the historical material.

How should I clean polished brass?

Remove dust gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding harsh abrasive compounds that scratch the surface metal. Preserving the natural patina is often preferred by collectors over aggressive polishing. Check for applied lacquers on older pieces before applying any cleaning solutions to prevent patchy removal of historic finishes.

What distinguishes a nursery guard from a standard screen?

Nursery guards feature a tall enclosed barrier made with iron frames and wire mesh specifically designed to surround the entire hearth area. Standard screens focus primarily on decorative front coverage or spark containment without the enclosing height. Look for top rails and heavier stabilizing feet on nursery models, which differentiate them from decorative folding fans.
