What is a wine table used for?

These compact surfaces originally served to hold wine glasses and bottles beside a chair during evening gatherings. Today they function as versatile bedside tables or plant stands in smaller spaces. Their light weight makes them easy to move wherever an extra surface is needed.

How do I date a wine table?

Dating relies on identifying timber choices, leg profiles and construction methods characteristic of specific periods like the Georgian or Victorian eras. Earlier pieces from the eighteenth century often show vernacular oak construction with hand-turned details. Later nineteenth-century examples frequently utilise mahogany with more standardised factory turning techniques.

What does tilt top mean?

A tilt top incorporates a pivoting mechanism under the surface that lets the table face turn upright. This clever design saved valuable floor space in historic homes. Checking the pivot block and catch reveals how original the mechanism remains.

Are these tables sturdy?

The three-legged tripod base ensures the table remains stable even on old, uneven floors. Because the weight centres directly over the column, they hold drinks and lamps securely. Care should be taken not to overload the edges of smaller tilt-top variants.
