Where should I hang wall shelves?

Wall hanging shelves suit living rooms, studies, and hallways where floor space is limited. They require secure fixings into solid wall anchors to support the weight of heavy books. Positioning them at eye level ensures ornaments and collections remain visible and easy to access during daily use.

What is the difference between a whatnot and an etagere?

A whatnot is traditionally an English multi-tiered shelving unit used for general display and storage. The term etagere often denotes a lighter, more decorative French version. Both forms serve the same practical function of holding decorative objects and books across multiple open tiers.

How do I care for antique timber shelves?

Timber display furniture benefits from a stable indoor environment away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight. Regular dusting with a dry cloth prevents grime accumulation on intricate mouldings. Applying a traditional beeswax polish occasionally helps nourish the wood surface and maintain its natural lustre.

Can these racks support heavy books?

Wall mounted shelves depend on the strength of their brackets and the wall fixings supporting them. Lighter wall shelves suit paperback books and decorative items. Freestanding whatnots and floor standing dressers offer greater structural support for heavier volumes and larger collections of books.
