Where were these cabinets used?

These pieces served practical storage functions in rural Scandinavian kitchens, halls, and domestic farmhouses. Families relied on them to store food, textiles, and everyday household utensils safely out of the way.

How do I care for painted pine?

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and dramatic humidity changes to protect the aged wood and delicate paint layers. Dust gently with a dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that might strip the historic surface.

What is ragwork paint?

Ragwork involves manipulating wet paint with rags or cloths to build up textured, multi-layered decorative effects. Cabinetmakers used this technique to mimic costlier materials or simply to add rich visual movement to plain pine.

How do I spot original paint?

Original paint shows natural wear, subtle crazing, and multiple micro-layers visible around edges and handles. Later overpainting often appears flat and uniform without the organic integration into the pine fibres found on older finishes.
