What is a castle top card box?

A castle top box displays an intricate relief or engraving of a specific historic building, such as Windsor Castle or St Paul's Cathedral, on the lid. These pieces were popular Victorian souvenirs and show exceptional detail in the architectural rendering.

How were bridge card boxes used?

Bridge card boxes sat on parlour tables to hold decks of playing cards, scoring pencils and occasionally small counters ready for an evening game. Their wooden or velvet-lined interiors protected the cards from moisture and warping between gatherings.

How do I identify an Edwardian piece?

Edwardian items date from the reign of King Edward VII between 1901 and 1910, often displaying hallmarks from that decade. The design vocabulary leans towards lighter ornamentation, elegant playing card caskets and refined bridge boxes.

Can I use these boxes for modern cards?

Table boxes made for whist or patience often accommodate modern bridge-sized playing cards, though standard poker decks may prove too wide. Measuring the internal compartment helps confirm whether contemporary cards will fit inside safely.
