What are staffordshire spaniel dog figures?

Staffordshire spaniel dog figures are ceramic mantelpiece ornaments modelled on King Charles spaniels and related breeds. Potters produced them primarily in pairs during the nineteenth century to decorate domestic hearths. Collectors find them in various formats, including standard figurines, money boxes, and spill vases. They reflect Victorian interior aesthetics and canine companionship.

How were staffordshire spaniel dog figures displayed?

Victorian households traditionally placed these spaniels in mirrored pairs on either end of the mantelpiece. The dogs faced inwards toward each other to create balance. Some variants served practical functions alongside decoration, incorporating holders for taper spills or coin slots for savings.

How do I date a staffordshire spaniel?

Dating relies on examining the ceramic body, glaze characteristics, and painting style. Victorian pieces from the mid-to-late nineteenth century often display distinct copper lustre or gilt detailing. Later productions from factories like Beswick or Royal Doulton exhibit twentieth-century manufacturing traits and refined earthenware bodies.

What materials are used in these dogs?

The core material is typically earthenware or stoneware, shaped through moulding techniques. Potters then applied surface glazes to seal the porous clay body. Decoration involved hand-painted enamels, gold paint, and copper lustre. Certain nineteenth-century examples feature inserted glass eyes for added realism.
