What is a sorrento marquetry table?

A sorrento marquetry table is a nineteenth-century Italian table decorated with intricate wood inlay, often depicting flowers, birds, or architectural scenes. These pieces were produced in Sorrento and brought back to Britain during the Grand Tour period.

What wood was used for Sorrento tables?

Maker workshops utilised walnut, olive wood, and mixed hardwood veneers for the main structure and foundation. Fruitwood inlay and other contrasting timbers provided the distinct coloured sections required for the detailed marquetry patterns.

Are these tables strictly Victorian?

While many examples date from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, the listings include pieces from the wider nineteenth century up to 1920. Styles span Italian Sorrento ware, Grand Tour items, and British domestic adaptations of the period.
