What were small blanket chests used for originally?

Households utilised these compact chests to store valuable textiles, blankets, and personal garments away from damp floors and dust. Their modest dimensions allowed placement in sleeping chambers and smaller rooms. Over generations, these boxes adapted to hold household papers, toys, and miscellaneous domestic goods. Their sturdy lids also permitted secondary use as casual seating or low tables.

How do I care for an antique wooden chest?

Protect antique timber by keeping chests away from direct heat sources, radiators, and strong sunlight that can dry and split the wood. Maintain a stable indoor environment to preserve the historic finish. Apply occasional applications of traditional beeswax to nourish dry surfaces rather than modern liquid polishes. Clean interiors gently with a dry brush to remove dust without harming the wood grain.

How can I tell the age of a blanket chest?

Examine the construction methods, tool marks on the interior boards, and the type of fasteners used, such as hand-wrought iron nails or wooden pegs. Hand-planed surfaces and early hinge types indicate older periods. Timber shrinkage patterns, oxidisation, and surface patination provide further clues to age. Regional styles and carved motifs often correspond to specific seventeenth or eighteenth-century design phases.
