What is silvered bronze?

Silvered bronze refers to metal sculptures cast in bronze that have undergone a plating or silvering process to achieve a bright, reflective exterior. This treatment distinguishes them from dark patinated bronzes. Artisans utilised this finish extensively during the Art Deco period to emphasise the metallic sheen of dancers, animals, and modernist figures.

How do I care for these sculptures?

Caring for a silvered bronze sculpture requires keeping the piece in a stable environment away from excess moisture and direct sunlight. Dusting should be done gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid commercial metal polishes or harsh chemical cleaners, as these substances can strip the delicate silvered finish or damage underlying patination.

Are these pieces made of solid bronze?

Many sculptures are cast in solid bronze, while others utilise alternative metals such as brass, copper alloys, or spelter beneath the silvered surface. Heavier pieces usually indicate solid bronze or metal construction. Examining the underside or base often reveals the nature of the metal and the method of attachment to the marble or onyx plinth.

How do I identify Art Deco examples?

Art Deco silvered bronze sculptures typically feature stylized human forms, dancers with outstretched arms, sleek animals like greyhounds, and geometric bases. The lines emphasise movement and modernity. Signatures from period artists such as Josef Lorenzl or Demetre Chiparus frequently appear on the base or lower edge of the casting.
