How do I clean a silver tray?

Clean silver-plated and sterling trays with a specialised silver polish and a soft cloth to remove tarnish without scratching the metal surface. Avoid harsh abrasive pads that can strip the plating. For trays incorporating wood or ceramic centres, take care to keep moisture away from the joins during cleaning. Buff gently after polishing to restore the original shine.

Can I use these trays for serving drinks?

These trays were originally designed for serving cocktails, tea, and spirits, making them entirely suitable for modern entertaining. The sturdy handles and raised rims on many examples provide practical support for glassware. When using antique silver plate regularly, wash the surface by hand promptly after use rather than leaving liquids standing on the metal.

How do I date a silver tray?

Dating relies on maker marks, assay office hallmarks on sterling pieces, and the prevailing decorative style such as Victorian scrollwork or Art Deco geometry. Silver plate often carries manufacturer ciphers that correspond to production ledgers. Oak-based trays with pierced silver galleries frequently point towards the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.
