Where should I hang a large overmantel mirror?

These large looking glasses function best positioned centrally above a fireplace mantel or mounted directly to a principal wall in a reception room. Their substantial height and reflective surface draw light across the space, creating an illusion of greater depth in the room.

How do I identify a nineteenth century revival mirror?

Nineteenth-century revival pieces emulate earlier eighteenth-century designs through heavy reliance on carved wood, gesso, and gilt finishes. Examination of the construction methods, the composition of the timber, and the backing materials helps distinguish original eighteenth-century items from later Victorian interpretations.

Foxed glass refers to mirror plates that display natural speckling and dark oxidation within the reflective backing. This ageing process occurs over decades and indicates genuine antique glass. Collectors appreciate this characteristic for the historical depth and softness it brings to the reflection.

Are these mirrors heavy?

The combination of solid carved wood, thick gesso, and heavy glass makes these frames considerably weighty. Proper wall anchoring into structural studs or masonry is essential for secure hanging. Overmantel versions often rest partly on the mantelpiece while being anchored safely to the wall behind.
