How do I identify a true period tallboy?

Examine the construction methods visible within the drawer linings and backboards, where hand-cut dovetails and native secondary timbers like oak indicate period manufacture. Look for consistent ageing signs and traditional timber movement rather than modern fasteners. Compare the proportions and hardware against documented examples from the Georgian and Regency eras. Genuine pieces display integrated brass pulls and timber veneers appropriate to their specific century.

What is the difference between a tallboy and a chest on chest?

A tallboy generally refers to a tall chest of drawers, while a chest on chest specifically describes a two-part stacked form where an upper chest rests directly on a lower, deeper base. Both designs achieve vertical storage while maintaining distinct proportions. In historical usage and current listings, these terms sometimes overlap to describe multi-drawer vertical storage units. The defining characteristic remains the stacked or towering elevation of the drawers.

How do I care for mahogany veneer surfaces?

Maintain a stable indoor environment away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to prevent the mahogany veneer from drying out or lifting. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes. Apply a traditional beeswax occasionally to nourish the timber and preserve the natural sheen of the polished surface. Gentle care protects the delicate grain patterns for future generations.

Where should I place a tallboy in my home?

Position the tall piece against a sturdy wall in a bedroom or hallway where its vertical height balances the room's proportions without blocking natural light. Ensure the placement avoids damp exterior walls to protect the internal oak and mahogany structure. Allow sufficient clearance around the drawers and working keys so that all compartments open smoothly. The commanding scale works best when given enough surrounding space to stand as a focal point.
