What is a campaign slope?

A campaign slope is a portable, brass-bound writing box designed for travel during the Regency and Georgian periods. It folds shut to protect ink and paper while on the move. When opened, the hinged lid creates an angled leather surface for writing letters in the field or at temporary quarters.

How were these boxes used?

Officers and travellers used these desks to store correspondence, stationery, and writing implements during military campaigns or long journeys. The internal compartments kept inkwells and nibs secure. The sloping lid provided a comfortable platform for writing dispatches away from a permanent home or office.

What woods do makers use?

Makers relied on durable hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, walnut, and coromandel to withstand travel conditions. These timbers offer structural strength and take a fine polish. Brass banding and flush mounts further reinforce the wooden corners against heavy impact and wear.

How do I spot secret drawers?

Secret drawers are concealed behind false partitions, sliding panels, or removable pen trays within the interior fittings. Finding them often requires inspecting the depth of stationary compartments. Cabinetmakers integrated these hidden spaces to let travellers secure money, seals, and confidential documents.
