How do I care for lacquer furniture?

Lacquer requires gentle maintenance to preserve its glossy finish and prevent the natural wood substrate from drying out. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and steady sources of artificial heat to avoid surface cracking. Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth rather than using chemical polishes or water. Maintaining a stable room temperature ensures the timber and lacquer layers expand and contract uniformly.

How can I tell Chinese and Japanese cabinets apart?

Chinese cabinets often emphasise symmetrical forms, bold red or black finishes, and narrative scenes depicting weddings, court life, or traditional landscapes. They frequently take the shape of large marriage cupboards or sturdy corner units. Japanese cabinets, particularly from the Meiji period, tend toward asymmetrical shelving arrangements known as shodanas, incorporating delicate wood grains, Shibayama inlay, and motifs drawn from nature.

Where should I place a lacquer cabinet in my home?

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall where its rich red, black, or gilt decoration can act as a standalone piece of art. Avoid damp areas and spaces with high humidity, such as unventilated hallways or damp corners. Because many examples feature delicate inlay or tiered shelving, place them away from heavy foot traffic where doors might be bumped. Pairing them with understated modern furniture allows the intricate lacquer work to stand out.
