What is an orange cobalt imari vase?

An orange cobalt imari vase is a ceramic or porcelain vessel decorated in the traditional Imari palette, combining deep blue underglaze with iron-red orange enamel and often gilt accents. These pieces originate from Japanese export kilns as well as nineteenth-century British potteries. They serve primarily as decorative objects, mantel garnitures, or large floor pieces, and some examples are converted into table lamps.

How do I date an imari vase?

Dating relies on examining the ceramic body, the characteristics of the glaze, and the specific style of the painted panels. Nineteenth-century examples often display the heavier potting and distinctive blue tones typical of the Meiji period or Victorian production. British makers such as Royal Crown Derby and Mason's Ironstone usually bear factory stamps or pattern numbers on the base to assist with identification.

Where were these vases made?

The pieces originate from two main sources: Japanese kilns, notably in the Arita region during the Meiji and late Edo periods, and British potteries producing domestic ceramic wares. Export pieces from Japan were shipped in large quantities to European markets during the nineteenth century, inspiring local potteries to create their own versions.

How should I display a large vase?

Large floor vases and lidded ginger jars require stable placement on a solid surface or directly on the floor away from heavy foot traffic. Many substantial nineteenth-century pieces are designed to sit upon dedicated wooden stands. When grouping items, such as a garniture of three, keep them spaced to allow the painted panels and cobalt details to be seen clearly.
