How were campaign desks used?

Officers used these desks to maintain records, write correspondence, and store maps while on active service or stationed abroad. The internal compartments kept ink, paper, and documents organised during transit. Many incorporated folding supports or removable stands to create a functional workspace in temporary quarters.

How do I identify a Victorian campaign desk?

Victorian campaign desks generally feature dense timbers such as mahogany or teak, reinforced with brass corners and flush recessed carrying handles. They often separate into distinct modular sections for easy movement. Look for interior drawers marked with cabinetmaker stamps or original brass strapping that secures the carcase edges.

Why use camphor wood for campaign furniture?

Camphor wood was favored for military furniture due to its natural aromatic oils that repel insects and resist humidity. This made it ideal for officers serving in tropical climates like British India. The timber provides a lightweight yet durable carcase suitable for frequent travel.
