What is an oak snap top table used for?

These tables served various functions in historic homes, acting as moveable surfaces for supper, candle lighting, or general entertaining. Today, they function well as occasional side tables where their tilt top mechanism allows compact storage when floor space is limited.

How do you operate the snap top mechanism?

A small catch or latch beneath the tabletop locks the surface into a horizontal position for normal use. Releasing this catch lets the top pivot vertically on its hinge, enabling the table to stand flat against a wall or in a corner.

Are these tables from the Georgian period?

The available pieces include examples dating from the 18th century and the Georgian era, alongside items from around 1800. Stylistic markers such as turned pedestals and tripod legs help identify pieces from these historical periods.

How do I care for antique oak furniture?

Keep wooden pieces away from direct heat sources and dramatic humidity fluctuations to prevent the timber from warping or splitting. Regular dusting with a dry cloth maintains the finish, whilst occasional application of appropriate wax preserves the historic patination.
