How do I wire an old lamp?

Rewiring requires removing the old interior fittings and threading modern three-core cable through the central metal channel. This ensures the metal body is properly earthed for domestic safety. It is advisable to consult a qualified electrician to carry out this work, preserving the vintage outer shell while bringing the electrical components up to current standards.

What shade fits a column lamp?

Tall, slender columns require drum or empire-shaped fabric shades that do not overwhelm the architectural proportions of the base. The lower diameter of the shade should generally match or slightly exceed the width of the lamp base. Neutral silks or linens work best, maintaining the classical aesthetic without drawing attention away from the metalwork or stone shaft.

Are these lamps heavy?

Many examples possess substantial weight due to their solid metal castings, onyx shafts, and weighted iron bases. This heft prevents the tall structures from tipping over easily during everyday use. When lifting or moving the lamp, support it by the base rather than the decorative capital or thin column neck to avoid straining the internal threaded rod.

How do I clean silver plated lamps?

Silver plated surfaces require a gentle cloth and a mild silver polish formulated to protect thin metal layers from abrasion. Care must be taken around fabric shade fittings and electrical components. Avoid abrasive scouring pads or harsh chemical dips, which can strip the original plating and ruin the aged patina built up over decades.
