How do I wire an old candelabra?

Conversion requires running heat-resistant flex through the internal channels of the piece without damaging the original metal structure. Professional rewiring ensures the fitting meets current safety standards whilst preserving the patination. Many pieces arrive already converted from candles to electricity, though checking the internal wiring remains sensible before installation.

Where should I place a wall sconce?

Wall sconces suit flanking positions above mantelpieces, mirrors or sideboards to provide balanced ambient light. Pairs work effectively at eye level in hallways and formal reception rooms. Consider the height of the ceiling and the projection of the arms when positioning multi-arm fixtures.

How do I clean gilt bronze?

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent dirt accumulation in the crevices of the chased ornament. Avoid abrasive metal polishes that can strip the gilding from the surface. A damp cloth is sufficient for removing light marks from stable brass and bronze surfaces.

What defines the Empire style?

The Empire style draws heavily on ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian motifs, favouring martial trophies, sphinxes and laurel wreaths. Ormolu mounts frequently contrast with dark patinated bronze or white marble. This aesthetic dominated French design during the early nineteenth century under Napoleon.
