What fits inside a display cabinet?

These cabinets suit books, ceramics, glassware, and small collectibles. Adjustable wooden or glass shelves accommodate objects of varying heights. Larger breakfront pieces hold substantial libraries, while bijouterie tables protect flat items like coins and medals beneath glass.

How do I identify an Edwardian piece?

Edwardian cabinets often feature lighter mahogany tones combined with satinwood inlay or stringing. The styling frequently borrows from Sheraton or Chippendale revivals. Proportions tend to be slender and upright, reflecting interior fashions around the turn of the twentieth century.

Were these cabinets used in shops?

Some surviving examples served commercial purposes rather than domestic ones. Countertop showcases and tall shop cabinets displayed chocolate, jewellery, or fine goods to customers. Commercial pieces often feature specialised maker plaques or inscriptions relating to the retail trade.

What is a bijouterie table?

A bijouterie table is a specialised display piece with a glazed top and shallow storage depth. They allowed homeowners to exhibit precious trifles at hand height in a drawing room. Most examples date from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, standing on slender legs with fabric-lined interiors.
