What is a fold over table used for?

These tables served primarily for social gatherings, acting as side or console furniture when closed. Opening the top provided a stable surface for evening card games, tea service or correspondence. In modern rooms, they function well as hall consoles or occasional desks that adapt when extra surface area is required.

How do I date a mahogany table?

Dating relies on combining stylistic clues with construction methods, such as the shape of the legs, the presence of inlay, and the type of hinge mechanism. Georgian pieces often display distinct carving styles, whereas Edwardian revivals employ lighter framing and machine-cut elements. Examining the underside and interior timbers helps confirm the period of manufacture through tool marks and wood oxidation.

Are these tables sturdy when opened?

Stability depends on the support mechanism, whether it is a swing leg, a concertina frame, or a gateleg action. Well-made examples distribute weight evenly across the structure so the unfolded leaf remains firm. Care should be taken when placing heavy items on the extended leaf, particularly on older concertina frames.

How should I care for mahogany?

Maintenance involves dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding placement near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. These conditions can dry out the timber and cause the polish or veneer to lift. Applying appropriate wax polish occasionally helps preserve the depth of the mahogany grain and protects the surface from minor scuffs.
