How do I fold a mahogany campaign table?

Most folding tables utilise hinged cross-frames or removable legs secured by brass pins. Release the locking catches carefully to allow the structure to collapse flat. Take time to support the leaves or top surfaces as you lower them to prevent strain on the original hinges.

Were these tables actually used in the military?

Officers commissioned portable furniture to accompany them on campaigns, expeditions, and postings abroad. The sturdy timbers and brass reinforcement protected the pieces during rough transit. Over time, civilian travellers and households adopted these practical designs for their flexibility and compact storage.

How should I care for the mahogany and brass?

Dust the mahogany regularly with a soft cloth and feed the wood occasionally with traditional beeswax to maintain the finish. Avoid placing the table near direct heat sources. Clean the brass fittings gently with a dry cloth, steering clear of harsh chemical polishes that might stain the surrounding wood.

How do I tell a Georgian table from a later piece?

Georgian and George III pieces often display finer hand-cut dovetails, distinct patination, and specific cabinetmaker touches from the late eighteenth century. Later nineteenth and twentieth-century examples frequently incorporate simpler commercial folding hardware. Examining the construction methods underneath the top and around the hinges reveals the period of manufacture.
