Where should I place a tallboy?

A mahogany bowfront tallboy suits bedrooms, hallways, or living spaces where vertical storage is required without sacrificing floor area. Its curved front allows it to fit comfortably into rooms where sharp corners might obstruct movement. Ensure the placement avoids direct sunlight and consistent heat sources to protect the mahogany veneer and polish over time.

How do I identify a Georgian piece?

Georgian pieces are identified through proportions, construction methods, and the specific character of the mahogany timber. Look for hand-cut dovetails and secondary woods like oak inside the drawers. Stylistic cues such as restrained satinwood banding or early brass pull handles often point toward the late 18th or early 19th century.

What is a linen press?

A linen press is a specialised storage furniture form that combines upper cabinet doors enclosing sliding trays with lower drawers. They were originally designed to store folded household linens and garments. Many examples share the bowfront profile and mahogany construction seen across standard chests from the same periods.

How do I care for the wood?

Maintain the mahogany surfaces by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally applying a quality beeswax. Avoid silicone-based polishes that can build up and dull the antique finish. Keep the room humidity stable to prevent the wood veneer from drying out or lifting over the decades.
