How do I adjust the shelves?

Most traditional pieces utilise wooden battens or metal pins inserted into vertical rows of holes inside the cabinet walls. Simply lift the shelf clear of its supports and relocate the pins to the desired height. Ensure the shelf rests level on all four supports before reloading your books to prevent warping over time.

Are the glass doors original?

Original glass panes often display subtle imperfections, minor bubbles, or uneven thickness characteristic of older manufacturing methods. The putty or wooden glazing beads should also show consistent age with the rest of the cabinet frame. Replacement glass tends to appear completely flat and uniform under reflected light.

How do I care for mahogany?

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding placement near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. Excessive warmth causes timber to dry out and veneers to lift. Apply a traditional wax polish sparingly when the surface appears dry to nourish the grain.

How do I distinguish Georgian from Victorian pieces?

Georgian examples generally exhibit simpler architectural proportions, classical cornice mouldings, and hand-cut dovetails within the drawers. Timber selection often focuses on dense, rich Cuban mahogany. Victorian cabinets frequently incorporate heavier decorative carvings, factory-produced components, and elaborate astragal bar designs.
