Were these chairs used only in bedrooms?

While often termed bedroom chairs, similar small-scale seating graced boudoirs, private salons, and drawing rooms. Their compact proportions made them versatile for intimate seating arrangements. Pairs and matched sets frequently served secondary reception spaces rather than primary dining rooms.

How should I care for giltwood frames?

Dust giltwood surfaces gently with a dry, soft cloth to protect the delicate metallic leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners and modern polishes that can degrade nineteenth-century finishes. Keep wooden frames away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent the gesso and gold leaf from cracking.

Can I reupholster a period armchair?

Reupholstering is common for functional seating, provided traditional webbing and padding techniques are respected. Preserving the exposed wooden show frame during the process maintains the structural integrity of the piece. Selecting historical velvet or patterned fabric helps retain the decorative character of the revival style.
