Where should I hang an overmantel mirror?

An overmantel mirror is traditionally placed directly above a fireplace mantel to reflect light and anchor the wall space. Its generous proportions also suit placement above a low sideboard or along a principal hallway wall.

How do I identify a nineteenth-century frame?

Nineteenth-century frames typically employ traditional construction methods using timber carcasses coated in gesso and gold leaf. Examination of the backboards, fixings, and the composition of the frame layers helps confirm the period of origin.

What causes foxed glass?

Foxing occurs over decades as the reflective backing of the mirror deteriorates due to age, humidity, and atmospheric exposure. Rather than a defect, this natural ageing process is often viewed as a mark of genuine antique status.

Are these mirrors heavy to hang?

These pieces incorporate solid wood frames, glass panels, and gesso layers that contribute to a substantial overall weight. Secure wall fixings and professional installation are essential to support the load safely.
