What is a club armchair?

A club armchair is a heavy, deep-seated upholstered chair designed for comfortable lounging in libraries or smoking rooms. These pieces typically feature wide arms and substantial padding covered in durable leather.

How do I date a leather armchair?

Dating relies on combining stylistic clues from the woodwork, such as mahogany frames or Victorian carving, with the upholstery method. Earlier examples from the nineteenth century show different frame profiles compared to Art Deco pieces from the 1930s.

How do I care for antique leather?

Maintain antique leather by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the hide from drying out. Applying appropriate leather balms periodically helps preserve the suppleness of the material.

Are these chairs comfortable for daily use?

Most leather club armchairs were built for sustained comfort with deep sprung seats and supportive backrests. Their robust construction handles everyday seating well when the underlying suspension remains sound.
