What is a large ziegler carpet?

A large ziegler carpet is a nineteenth-century Persian floor covering created for Western markets. These rugs combine traditional Persian weaving methods with designs suited to European homes. They appear primarily in room sizes, country house proportions and palace dimensions dating from the 1880s through 1900.

Where were these carpets made?

These carpets were produced in Persia during the late nineteenth century, specifically in weaving centres such as Sultanabad and Mahal. Commercial enterprises directed workshop production to satisfy European and American demand. The resulting floor coverings adapted classic Persian motifs into expansive scales suitable for large Western drawing rooms.

What materials did weavers use?

Weavers constructed these carpets using wool pile on cotton foundations. This pairing provided the durability necessary for room-sized and palace-scale floor coverings. The wool accepted natural dye formulas that yielded the muted, harmonious tones characteristic of the period.

How do I style a large ziegler carpet?

These carpets anchor large reception rooms, dining spaces and drawing rooms with their expansive fields and historic patterns. Their subdued palettes allow them to complement both period interiors and modern furnishings. Position the carpet centrally in the room to display the full field design and decorative borders.
