What is a partners desk?

A partners desk is a large double-sided writing table built with drawers and cupboards accessible from both the front and the back. This configuration allowed two people, such as business partners or legal associates, to sit and work opposite each other in the same room. Unlike standard pedestal desks meant to sit against a wall, partners desks are fully finished on all four sides to stand prominently in the middle of a library or study.

How do I care for a leather top?

The leather inset on a writing table requires gentle cleaning using a slightly damp cloth followed by a neutral leather cream to prevent drying and cracking. Avoid using harsh chemical polishes or excessive water, which can stain the hide and damage the surrounding wood. Applying a quality microcrystalline wax to the wooden surround helps protect the polished mahogany while keeping moisture away from the leather borders.

Can these desks be disassembled for transport?

Many large nineteenth-century pedestal and partners desks are modular construction, separating into three main components consisting of the two drawer pedestals and the top. This clever design enabled heavy furniture to be maneuvered through doorways and up staircases during delivery. Securing the internal locking mechanisms and removing the drawers before moving the desk reduces weight and prevents accidental damage to the structural joints.

How do I distinguish Georgian from Victorian pieces?

Georgian writing tables generally exhibit more restrained classical proportions, understated bracket or straight feet, and solid timber construction with minimal applied ornamentation. Victorian pieces often embrace heavier proportions, richer flame mahogany veneers, and elaborate architectural revival styles. Examining the construction of the drawer linings and the type of secondary timbers used inside provides further clues regarding the exact period of manufacture.
