What is a standard lamp?

A standard lamp is simply the traditional British term for what is commonly called a floor lamp today. It refers to a tall, freestanding lighting fixture designed to stand directly on the floor and illuminate a room from an elevated position. These pieces typically feature a heavy base for stability and a vertical column that may include adjustable height mechanisms. They were historically placed beside armchairs or reading desks before overhead electric lighting became standard in domestic interiors.

How do telescopic floor lamps work?

Telescopic floor lamps utilise a two-part sliding column that allows the overall height of the light to be adjusted up or down. A key or screw mechanism secures the inner shaft at the desired position. This adjustment permitted Victorian and Edwardian users to direct illumination lower for reading or raise the bulb higher to spread light across a larger space. When examining these pieces, smooth movement along the shaft indicates careful historical manufacturing.

Were these lamps originally electric?

Many older floor lights listed as standard lamps started life as oil lamps or paraffin burners before being converted to electricity later in their lifespan. Conversion often involved running wiring through the original burner assembly or hollow telescopic stem. This adaptation allows antique brass standards from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to function safely with modern electrical plugs and contemporary bulbs while retaining their original patinated metalwork.

How do I identify an Edwardian floor lamp?

Edwardian floor lamps typically display lighter, more refined proportions compared to heavy Victorian models, often drawing upon Neoclassical revival designs or simple Arts and Crafts principles. They frequently incorporate slender brass columns and polished surfaces. Clues to this period include simpler stepped bases, restrained floral openwork, and functional engineering designed for domestic reading spaces. The overall aesthetic leans toward understated elegance rather than heavy ornamentation.
