How do I hang a heavy overmantel mirror?

Heavy overmantel mirrors require secure fixings anchored directly into the wall studs or masonry to support the substantial combined weight of wood, gesso, and glass. Professional installation is often recommended for large-scale pieces. Ensure the hanging wire or brackets match the load capacity specified by the mirror frame construction.

How do I clean a gilt gesso surface?

Dust the carved gesso gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent accumulation without disturbing the delicate gold leaf layer. Avoid liquid cleaners or chemical agents that can strip the historic finish. Keep these mirrors away from direct moisture and strong heat sources to preserve the gesso and wood substrate.

Are these mirrors original antique glass?

Many older pieces retain their original mirror plates, which can display characteristic signs of age such as minor foxing or slight surface waviness. Replacement glass sometimes occurs during the restoration history of a piece. Examining the depth and backing of the glass helps determine its period relationship to the frame.

How do I tell Victorian from Georgian mirrors?

Georgian mirrors often feature specific stylistic traits from the reigns of George I and George II, showing restrained classical motifs or early rococo carvings. Victorian examples tend toward heavier proportions and distinct revival styles. Examining the construction joints and the composition of the gesso underneath helps confirm the period of manufacture.
