What is a cassolette?

A cassolette is a decorative vessel with a reversible lid that switches between an urn and an incense burner. This clever design allows the piece to alter its silhouette depending on the desired room display. Originating in classical forms, nineteenth century makers revived the shape extensively in France. They paired cast bronze mounts with marble bases to create striking decorative objects for mantelpieces and tables.

How do I reverse the lid?

Lift the top section straight up from the neck of the vase and turn it over. One side presents a solid decorative finial, while the inverted side reveals a pierced bowl or burner. Handle older pieces with care to avoid scratching the delicate ormolu or chipping the surrounding marble rim. Ensure the vessel sits on a stable surface before adjusting the configuration.

Were these used for perfume?

Historically, the internal well held scented oils or aromatics that diffused when heated by coals or ambient warmth. In practice, many nineteenth century examples functioned primarily as decorative ornaments rather than active burners. Clean any residual historical scent gently with a dry cloth to preserve the interior metal finish. Avoid using liquid cleaners on the gilt surfaces inside the burner well.

How do I identify Louis XVI style?

Louis XVI style pieces draw on classical restraint, featuring symmetrical geometric lines, fluted columns, and laurel wreaths. You will spot architectural motifs like acanthus leaves, beaded borders, and urn shapes derived from archaeological discoveries. In contrast to later exuberant revivals, this aesthetic prioritises proportion and balance. The bronze mounts on these pieces are tightly controlled and integrated cleanly into the marble bodies.

What marble types appear most?

Nineteenth century makers favoured several distinct stone varieties for their plinths and bodies. White statuary marble, deep green varieties, and rich red rouge marble dominate the surviving selection. These stones were selected for their ability to take a high polish and contrast sharply with the bright gold ormolu mounts. Each block displays unique natural veining that roots every piece in its geological origin.
