How do I clean a gilded frame?

Dust the moulding gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove surface particles without disturbing the metallic leaf. Avoid using water, liquid cleaners, or chemical solvents, as these can strip the delicate gilt finish. For stubborn grime, consult a professional conservator rather than attempting home remedies. Maintaining a stable indoor humidity prevents the underlying gesso from cracking or flaking away from the wood.

Are these paintings original?

The selection includes original oil paintings executed by hand, alongside period studio works and vintage oleograph prints on canvas. Each listing specifies the medium, allowing you to distinguish between unique painted artworks and mechanical reproductions. Examining the canvas texture under magnification reveals the brushstrokes and paint buildup typical of an original hand-painted work. Signatures, artist stamps, and exhibition labels further help confirm authenticity.

How do I hang a heavy canvas?

Support heavy framed canvases using sturdy picture hooks screwed directly into wall studs or secure masonry anchors. Wire or heavy-duty D-rings attached to the wooden frame must match the total weight of the piece. Position the artwork away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect both the canvas and the gilt frame from warping. Ensure the wall mount distributes the load evenly across the structure.

What period are these frames from?

Frames range from eighteenth-century carved giltwood to nineteenth-century Victorian revival styles and mid-century interpretations. Many pieces retain their original period frames, while others have been paired with complementary antique mouldings over time. Evaluating the joinery, gesso work, and corner construction helps determine whether a frame is contemporaneous with the canvas it holds. Matching styles often reflect the framing traditions of the era in which the artwork was created.
