How were georgian wine boxes used?

These boxes sat beneath the dining room sideboard to store and chill wine bottles before they were served to guests at the table. Their heavy internal lead linings held ice and water to keep the contents cool during long meals. Servants would unlock the box when replenishment was needed, keeping the family's best vintages secure under lock and key. Smaller variants functioned as tabletop carriers to transport bottles safely from the cellar.

What is the difference between a cellarette and a wine cooler?

In period terms, the two descriptors largely overlap and refer to timber receptacles designed for bottle storage and chilling. Cellarettes often emphasise secure lidded storage, while coolers frequently incorporate lead linings specifically for ice. Both forms belong to the same family of dining room furniture and appear interchangeably in historical inventories. The choice of name often depends on the specific shape and whether the interior is lined for water.

How do I date a georgian wine box?

Dating relies on observing the prevailing architectural styles, timber choices, and hardware associated with specific reigns. Pieces from the George III period often feature neat octagonal shapes with brass banding, whereas Regency examples lean towards bold sarcophagus forms. Cabinetmaking techniques, such as the evolution of dovetailing and the profile of the mouldings, provide further chronological clues. Examining the timber grain and secondary woods helps confirm whether a piece belongs to the eighteenth or nineteenth century.
