What is a carver chair?

A carver is an armchair designed to accompany a matching set of dining chairs. They generally feature open wooden arms and sit at either end of a table. Historically, these chairs provided extra comfort for the host while maintaining the stylistic uniformity of the dining suite.

How do I identify a Gainsborough chair?

Gainsborough chairs are wide, low-seated armchairs with fully upholstered backs and padded open arms supported by wooden uprights. The mahogany legs often terminate in Marlborough feet or castors. These seats were originally built for writing desks and library tables during the Georgian era.

Are these chairs suitable for daily use?

Solid mahogany frames and sturdy joinery make these armchairs durable for everyday sitting. Many examples feature robust leather or tight fabric upholstery that withstands regular wear. Placing them in studies, living rooms, or hallways allows them to function as practical seating while retaining their decorative presence.

How do I distinguish eighteenth-century pieces from later revivals?

Dating relies on examining the timber construction, tool marks, and wear patterns on the underside of the frame. Eighteenth-century pieces show hand-cut joinery and period-specific secondary woods. Revival pieces from the Victorian and Edwardian eras often utilise machine-sawn timber and standardised fixings despite copying earlier Georgian styles.
