What is a drum table?

A drum table is a circular library table with a deep frieze containing drawers, usually supported by a single central column and splayed legs. These tables rotated easily, allowing documents or books to be reached from any seating position around the perimeter. Originating in the late 18th century, they served primarily in libraries and studies as central room pieces rather than wall-mounted desks.

How do I care for the leather top?

Maintain the leather insert by dusting gently with a dry cloth and occasionally applying specialised leather balms to prevent drying or cracking. Avoid excessive moisture, direct sunlight, and harsh chemical cleaners which can damage the delicate gold tooling and the surface hide. Using blotters or pads during heavy writing preserves the vintage leather surface from deep impressions and ink stains.

Are these tables suitable for daily computer work?

Many antique writing tables and pedestal desks accommodate modern laptops and desktop accessories, provided the kneehole height and surface dimensions suit your workspace requirements. Pedestal desks offer substantial surface area and integrated drawer storage for peripheral items. Verify interior kneehole clearances carefully, as older desks were occasionally built lower than contemporary standard office furniture.

How do I distinguish a revival piece from an original?

Distinguishing revival furniture from original Georgian pieces involves examining timber shrinkage, secondary woods inside drawer linings, and the oxidation of metal fixings. Revival pieces from the Victorian era and 1930s often utilise machine-sawn framing components and different construction tolerances. Consulting the timber patination, block construction beneath, and overall wear patterns helps clarify the true age of the table.
