How do I measure for a surround?

Measure the height and width of your existing fireplace opening carefully before selecting a timber or stone chimneypiece. Take account of the internal clearance needed for the grate and hearth. Check the exterior dimensions against your wall space to ensure the pilasters and mantel shelf fit the proportions of the room without obstruction.

Can I use an antique fender with a modern fire?

Historic steel and brass fenders adapt well to modern hearths provided the internal dimensions match your setup. They sit directly on the floor to frame the fire opening. Verify that the heat output of your modern insert will not damage delicate cut steel or vintage lacquered brass surfaces over extended use.

How do I clean painted pine?

Dust painted pine and gesso surfaces gently with a dry, soft cloth to remove everyday accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical solvents that might lift historic paint layers. Test any cleaning method on a hidden area first, as older gesso ornamentation can soften or dissolve when exposed to excess moisture.

What is the difference between George III and Regency styles?

George III pieces often display heavier neoclassical symmetry, featuring urns, swags, and intricate carved gesso relief work on pine. Regency designs tend toward cleaner lines and architectural austerity, sometimes drawing inspiration from ancient Greek forms or incorporating polished brass mounts.
