An etagere is an open-shelved piece of furniture designed for displaying small decorative items and ornaments. These tier stands use vertical space efficiently to hold collections without crowding a room.

Where do corner etageres go?

These pieces fit directly into the corner of a room, making use of otherwise wasted spatial junctions. Their angled backs ensure they sit flush against adjoining walls.

How are etageres and whatnots different?

The terms are often used interchangeably to describe multi-tiered shelving units for display. Traditional etageres emphasise open display, while some whatnots incorporate enclosed cupboards at the base.

What materials were used?

Cabinetmakers primarily built these stands using mahogany, oak, and occasionally exotic timbers like padouk. Surfaces sometimes feature marble tops, brass fittings, and cane panels.
