What is a bow front chest?

A bow front chest is a drawer unit featuring a convex, curved facade that swells outward from the corners. These pieces were built primarily during the Georgian and Regency eras. Cabinetmakers shaped the front timbers to create this distinctive profile, pairing the curved shape with multiple functional drawers for domestic storage.

How do I date a Georgian chest?

Dating relies on observing construction techniques, timber choices, handle styles, and secondary woods. Pieces from the George III and Regency periods often feature specific brass hardware and bracket or plain feet. Comparing drawer linings and dovetail joinery alongside recorded stylistic shifts helps narrow down the decade of manufacture.

Where were they used?

These chests served primarily as bedroom furniture for storing garments, linens, and personal items. Their generous drawer depth accommodated bulky textiles. Over time, collectors also placed them in hallways and living spaces due to their decorative curved facades and useful top surfaces.

Are small chests common?

Small formats appear periodically in both archive records and current listings, prized for their compact footprints. Cabinetmakers produced these scaled-down versions for tighter residential spaces. Despite their reduced dimensions, they retain the standard configuration of graduating drawers and curved mahogany fronts.
