What is a linen press?

A linen press is a tall case furniture piece that combines upper cupboard storage with a chest of drawers at the base. Historically, the upper section held sliding shelves or trays designed to keep household linen flat. Over time, many of these pieces were converted into hanging wardrobes by removing the internal trays. On this page, you will find examples retaining both their original trays and their converted wardrobe interiors.

How do I use a bedside cabinet?

Bedside cabinets provide enclosed storage next to a bed for books, lamps, and personal items. Their compact footprints suit contemporary bedrooms while offering period character. Many styles feature a small door concealing a shelf or compartment, keeping the surface tidy. Pairs are frequently available for matching bedside arrangements.

How do I date a Georgian piece?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, timber choices, and stylistic traits. Pieces from the actual Georgian era typically show period secondary timbers and hand-cut dovetails. Revival pieces from later centuries often mimic these 18th-century forms using slightly different machinery marks and secondary woods. Comparing handles, hinges, and internal linings helps clarify the age.

Mahogany is the dominant timber across these listings, appearing in solid form and as flame mahogany veneer. Satinwood, oak, walnut, burr walnut, and pine also feature in specific pieces. Inlays often utilise contrasting satinwood or ebony lines to highlight panel shapes. Secondary woods inside drawers frequently include pine or oak depending on the regional workshop origin.

Are these pieces painted?

While the majority of listings showcase polished mahogany or walnut grain, some pine wardrobes and specific linen presses feature painted finishes. These painted items are often listed as suitable for further painting or waxing by the buyer. Original painted decoration appears on select Regency period pieces within the selection. This variety allows for integration into both natural wood and painted interior schemes.
