How do I date a painted cabinet?

Examine the timber construction, fixings, and nail types used in the assembly of the carcass and drawers. Hand-cut dovetails and hand-forged iron hardware generally point to earlier periods. The surface paint also provides clues through craquelure, wear patterns, and pigment analysis. Comparing construction methods with documented regional styles helps narrow down the decade or century of origin.

Are painted finishes usually original?

Many antique pieces have undergone re-painting or touch-ups over their long operational lives in country houses. Original paint layers often exhibit natural thinning and distinctive underlying crackle. Closer inspection under magnification can reveal multiple layers of historical decoration. Finding remnants of early pigment beneath later coats is common in vernacular furniture.

Where were these cabinets used?

These storage pieces served various utilitarian and formal rooms across French and continental households. Kitchens, sculleries, and bedrooms relied on cupboards and armoires for linen and provisions. More decorative commodes and side cabinets occupied salons and dining rooms to display porcelain and store tableware. Regional pieces adapted to the specific storage needs of rural homes.

How do I care for historic painted wood?

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels and keep wooden furniture away from direct heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth rather than chemical polishes. Protect delicate painted surfaces from moisture and abrasive cleaners. Professional conservation may be required if flaking pigment occurs.
