How do I identify Louis XV style?

Louis XV style furniture is characterised by curved serpentine lines, cabriole legs, and rococo ornamentation. These pieces often feature asymmetrical floral carvings and painted or gilt surfaces. Look for flowing organic shapes rather than straight architectural lines. The revival pieces from the nineteenth century capture this same theatrical grace.

Are these pieces in original paint?

Many items retain their original painted surfaces, while others show later decorative finishes applied during revival periods. Descriptions usually specify if the paint is period or refreshed. Examine the surface under natural light to check for craquelure and wear patterns that indicate age. Original finishes often show subtle patination around frequently touched areas.

How do I clean a marble top?

Marble surfaces require gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and warm soapy water. Avoid acidic cleaners or vinegar which can etch the polished stone. Dry the surface thoroughly after wiping to maintain the natural sheen. Periodic sealing helps protect the stone from stains.

Where should I place a commode?

A commode serves well as a focal point in a hallway, living room, or bedroom. The flat top provides a surface for lamps, mirrors, or display objects. Ensure the piece sits away from direct heat sources to protect the painted wood and underlying timber. Measure your clearance carefully if placing the item in a narrow passage.
