What is a French commode?

A French commode is a low chest of drawers used primarily for bedroom storage, typically featuring a fitted marble top. These pieces often display neoclassical or empire lines, providing a sturdy surface alongside deep drawers for clothing and linens.

How do I identify French Empire furniture?

French Empire pieces are characterised by heavy mahogany construction, symmetrical forms, and classical brass or ormolu mounts. They reflect early nineteenth-century design influences, often omitting excessive carving in favour of architectural dignity and rich timber grains.

How do I care for mahogany bedroom furniture?

Mahogany requires consistent indoor humidity and occasional polishing with appropriate wax to maintain the natural lustre of the wood. Keep pieces away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement, and wipe marble surfaces gently with a damp cloth.
