How do I tell an 18th-century mirror from a revival piece?

Eighteenth-century pieces typically exhibit hand-carved wooden frames beneath the gesso, showing tool marks and subtle asymmetries born of manual construction. The glass plates often display authentic mercury backing with natural foxing spots. Revival pieces from the nineteenth or early twentieth century generally feature machine-prepared components, heavier plaster composition, and modern bevelled mirror plates. Examining the joinery at the corners and the composition of the gesso usually reveals the true age of the frame.

What is mercury glass?

Mercury glass is an older type of mirror plate created by applying a liquid amalgam of mercury and tin to the back of the glass sheet. This method yields a softer, darker reflection compared to modern aluminium or silver coatings. Over the decades, the chemical compound reacts with air and moisture, creating dark spots and cloudy patches known as foxing. Collectors prize this aged appearance for the historic authenticity it brings to a room.

How should I hang a heavy giltwood mirror?

Hanging a substantial carved frame requires locating structural wall studs or masonry to support the considerable weight safely. Using professional mirror brackets or a sturdy french cleat distributes the load evenly across the wall. Avoid relying solely on decorative top rings attached to the frame, as these can weaken over time. Consulting a professional installer ensures the piece remains secure.

Can these mirrors be placed in a bathroom?

High humidity and fluctuating temperatures present significant risks to antique gesso and delicate gold leaf surfaces. Moisture can soften the historic plaster layers and accelerate the deterioration of the wooden structure. Keeping these decorative items in dry living spaces, hallways, or bedrooms preserves the finish. Environmental stability protects the delicate carved details from cracking or flaking away.
