Where should I place a console table?

These tables find a natural home in entrance halls, formal reception rooms, or living spaces where wall space allows for a striking focal point. Placing one beneath a matching mirror or artwork creates a balanced display surface for lamps or decorative objects. Because they were originally designed to anchor architectural wall spaces, they work particularly well against plain walls that allow the carved giltwood and marble to stand out.

Are these tables strong enough for daily use?

Most antique consoles feature heavy marble tops supported by sturdy timber frames, making them quite stable for holding decorative items. However, their traditional construction often relied partly on wall fixings for total stability, so freestanding placement requires care. Heavier items can safely rest on the marble surface, but owners should avoid leaning heavy body weight against the edge of the table to protect the antique joinery.

How do I distinguish 18th-century pieces from revival pieces?

Eighteenth-century originals display hand-cut joinery, older tool marks, and specific patination on the underlying pine or oak frames. The gilding often shows distinct wear patterns and layers accumulated over long periods of maintenance. Revival pieces from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries usually exhibit machine-sawn timber elements or denser, more uniform gesso layers. Stylistic clues also help, as nineteenth-century makers frequently reinterpreted earlier Rococo or Louis XVI designs with bolder proportions.
