How do I clean a brass and marble table?

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent grime accumulation on the metal mounts. Avoid abrasive cleaners on both the brass framework and the stone top to protect the original finish. Treat marble surfaces with pH-neutral solutions specifically formulated for natural stone. Polish brass components sparingly using non-abrasive metal cleaners designed for antique hardware.

Are these tables suitable for everyday use?

Most pieces function well in daily settings provided users protect vulnerable surfaces from moisture and heat. Marble and glass tops offer practical durability while requiring coasters for acidic beverages. Consider the stability of antique joinery and lighter frames when placing tables in busy household areas. Regular placement away from direct sunlight preserves wooden veneers and lacquered finishes.

How do I identify a Louis XV style table?

Look for characteristic curved lines, cabriole legs, and asymmetrical scrollwork defining the overall silhouette. These designs emphasise organic forms inspired by nature rather than strict symmetry. Examine the brass mounts for rococo motifs such as acanthus leaves and shellwork. Marquetry panels on these pieces often feature floral arrangements or pastoral scenes.

What is the difference between a centre table and a coffee table?

Centre tables originated as freestanding display pieces designed to stand in the middle of a room during earlier centuries. They generally feature taller proportions matching historical seating arrangements. Coffee tables are lower surfaces adapted or manufactured specifically for modern living room seating heights. Many nineteenth century centre tables and occasional tables have been professionally lowered to function as coffee tables.
