Where should a large arch mirror be hung?

These mirrors traditionally anchor a room by hanging directly above a fireplace mantelpiece as an overmantel. They also function on principal salon walls to reflect light and increase the visual scale of the space. Sufficient wall reinforcement is necessary because the timber, gesso, and glass assemblies carry substantial weight. Positioning them opposite a window maximises natural light distribution across the room.

What is the difference between mercury glass and modern glass?

Mercury glass utilises an amalgam sealed between glass panes, producing a distinctive speckled and deep reflection. Modern silvering techniques yield a clear, uniform image without historical foxing or clouding. Many nineteenth-century mirrors retain their original mercury plates, while others received modern replacements during their long history of use.

How do I identify a Louis Philippe mirror?

Louis Philippe mirrors feature a characteristic rounded or segmental arch top paired with clean, unadorned frame borders. The aesthetic avoids heavy carving in favour of subtle proportions suited to nineteenth-century domestic interiors. Subtle details like corner brackets or restrained crests occasionally appear, but the overall silhouette remains graceful and restrained.

What is bare gesso on an antique mirror?

Bare gesso refers to frames where the outer layer of gold leaf or gilt has worn away to expose the white plaster preparation layer beneath. This condition reveals the structural ground applied by the nineteenth-century maker. Collectors often prize this untouched surface for its honest record of age and historical use.
