What is a floral carved lamp table?

A floral carved lamp table is a small occasional surface decorated with carved plant or flower motifs, originally intended to support a table lamp or decorative object. These pieces emerge in various forms from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, spanning English, Victorian, and Eastern workshop traditions.

How were these tables used originally?

Victorians and Edwardians placed these small stands beside seating areas to hold oil lamps, candles, or decorative ornaments. Their portable nature allowed servants or homeowners to reposition them easily around the drawing room as lighting needs changed.

How do I identify a Victorian lamp table?

Victorian examples often employ walnut, burr walnut, or mahogany, frequently featuring marquetry inlays or turned supports. Look for construction methods and timber ageing typical of the mid-to-late nineteenth century, such as hand-cut joints and traditional polish finishes.

How do I care for an antique wood table?

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity shifts. Apply traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the hardwood and preserve the natural sheen of the timber.
